Netgear is a multinational company that manufactures computer networking devices. It is based in San Jose, California, mainly known for its manufacture of high-speed routers. Netgear is the first company to introduce the world’s fastest wireless router. Netgear works on a variety of technologies such as Wi-Fi and LTE, Ethernet, and powerline. One of the good things about Netgear routers is that these can also be set up if you don’t have a computer. Netgear routers can also be set up on laptops, smartphones, and tablets.

Before setting up the Netgear Router on your devices the foremost thing that needs to be done is setting up the router physically.

  1. Connect the router to the modem and plug one end of an Ethernet cable to the modem. Connect the other end into the internet port on the router. (The internet port is yellow or slightly set apart from the rest of the router ports).
  2. Connect the router to the computer by plugging one end of an Ethernet cable into the computer Ethernet port. Connect the other end of the port into any one of the four LAN ports on the router.                
  3. Power ON the router and wait for the WiFi LED to light.
  4. Find the label on the router on the back or bottom side.
  5. On the router, the label finds the WiFi network name (SSID) and network key (password).

Setting Up Netgear Router Using Nighthawk Application

If you are using a smartphone or tablet for setting up your Netgear Router then it is recommended that you use the Nighthawk application. Because the Nighthawk application itself comes with the instructions required for installing the router. Nighthawk application is available for both Android and iOS devices.

  1. Download the Nighthawk application from your device’s application store.
  2. After installing the application go to the Settings of your smartphone.
  3. Under Settings, go to WiFi. In the list of available WiFi find the WiFi with your WiFi network name (SSID) and log in using the network key (password) which is written on the label of your WiFi router.
  4. Open the Netgear’s Nighthawk application on your device.
  5. Follow the instructions on the application for installing the router.

Setting Up Netgear Router Using Web Interface

Following are the steps for setting up your Router using Web Interface:

  1. Press the power button to turn ON the router.
  2. Open the WiFi connection manager and find your Netgear’s WiFi name.
  3. Connect using the password written on the label of the router.
  4. Open the web browser on your computer and type in the following URL or You can also type the router’s default IP address ( or After entering the URL press Enter
  5. Log in to the router. The default username is admin and the default password is password. The username and password are case sensitive.
  6. Click on ADVANCED and go to the Setup Wizard.
  7. Select the Yes radio button and click on Next.
  8. The router detects the internet connection and you will be asked to log in.
  9. Enter the new password and confirm it.
  10. You will be asked to keep two security questions.
  11. Once you click on Next, a new Congratulations page will appear.
  12. Network Settings will appear. You can print or save this page.
  13. Click on Next and you will be redirected to a Firmware Update Assistant page.
  14. If there is no update available, click on OK and your router is set up.
  15. If an update is available, click on Yes to update your firmware.
  16. The router will reboot and you will be asked to log in.
  17. Now you can log in with the new password you kept earlier, and the same username i.e. admin.

Configuring A Netgear Wireless Adapter Using Netgear Smart Wizard Software

When you purchase your Netgear Wireless Adapter, it comes with Netgear Smart Wizard software utility. It will help you in connecting your adapter to an existing network. Depending on the type of wireless security you are using, the steps to configure will differ. Let’s look at these steps according to your network type.

Common Steps For Both The Network Type

  1. Click on Start and go to All Programs and find Netgear wireless adapter folder.
  2. In it select the option Netgear Smart wizard.
  3. Netgear Smart Wizard wireless utility window will appear.
  4. Click on the Network Tab, it will scan all the available networks in range.
  5. Select the SSID of the network to which you want to connect and then click the Connect button.

Configuring Smart Wizard For WEP Encryption

  1. In the Settings tab, select WEP under the Security option and then choose the option to Enter key manually.
  2. Type the 10 or 26 characters in the space provided.
  3. If your Network key consists of 10 characters, set it to 64 bits. If it consists of 26 characters, set it to 128bits.
  4. In the Profiles tab select a name for your settings selection, to help you in the future.
  5. Click on Save Profile.
  6. Click on Apply to save the changes.
  7. Go to the About tab if you want to see the IP Address.

Configuring Smart Wizard For WPA Encryption

  1. In the Settings tab, select WPA under the Security option.
  2. Enter the WPA pass-phrase or password in the empty field next to the WPA drop-down menu.
  3. In the Profiles tab select a name for your settings selection, to help you in the future.
  4. Click on Save Profile.
  5. Click on Apply to save the changes.
  6. Go to the About tab if you want to see the IP Address.
