  • Click on the Start menu
  • Go to the Control Panel and select “View as Category” from the top right corner of the screen
  • Select on “Uninstall a Program” under the program section

  • Locate Avast in Control Panel and select Uninstall/Repair
  • Uninstall Wizard should be open with several options like- Update, Repair, Modify and Uninstall

  • Click on Repair and then click on Next
  • Click on Confirm when the pop-up arrives
  • Avast will be restarted with default settings (which was before the error shows up)
  • Click on “Finish” after the completion of uninstall
  • Restart your PC and check if the issue is fixed

Method 2: Restart The Avast Antivirus Service

Another easy way to fix the error is to restart the Avast Antivirus Service. You can easily restart the service. An error may have occurred regarding the Avast Antivirus Service which is creating the issue in opening the antivirus. To restart the avast antivirus service, follow these steps-

  • Press Windows key and R to open run box
  • Type “services.msc” in the box and click Ok to open Services window

  • Locate the Avast Antivirus service from the list
  • Right-click on it and then select “Properties”
  • Now see whether the services have started or stopped. Go to the “Services Status Section”
  • If the service has stopped, keep it on hold until you continue to execute
  • Make sure that the Startup menu has been set to “Automatic”

  • Confirm the pop-up while changing the Startup type
  • Go to the Start button before you exit

  • Again, open the Services Properties window
  • Go to the log on tab and click on Browser
  • Under the “Enter the object name to select” entry box, type the name of your account and then click on “Check names” option

  • Wait until your account’s name is available
  • Once you finish the above steps, click Ok. If you have set up a password then type the password in the box. Now check if the issue is resolved

Method 3: Perform A Clean Installation

By performing a clean install, this issue can be fixed. If the above methods do not work, then perform a clean install. To do this, follow the steps mentioned below-

  • Downloading the latest version of Avast from the official page of Avast
  • Go to the”Uninstall” section displayed by Avast. From there download the uninstall utility Avast Clean. Make sure that you have saved to the system
  • Disconnect the internet once you have downloaded files and boot into “Safe Mode”
  • Now press Windows key and R t open run box
  • Type “msconfig” in the Run box and then click Ok to open System Configuration

  • Go to the boot section
  • Checkmark the box next to Safe Mode and click Ok
  • Restart your PC to boot into Safe mode

  • Now, run the Avast Uninstall Utility and browse the folder where you have installed Avast (Be careful to choose the correct folder because the folder you select will be deleted or corrupted). Browse through the File explorer to find the correct folder
  • Click “Remove” option and restart your computer with the normal startup

Method 4: Disable Shields To Solve The Issue

You can disable shields to fix the “Avast won’t open” issue. To do so, follow the steps mentioned below-

  • Right-click on the Avast icon
  • Go to the shields control option

  • Select “Disable” for a few minutes (approx 10 minutes)
  • After that “Enable” it
  • Select the option “Enable all shields”

Method 5: Update Avast Antivirus

Update Avast antivirus. Your antivirus should be running the latest version. To update the antivirus follow the steps mentioned below-

  • Open Avast antivirus
