Fix Critical Process Died Error in Windows 10 [4 Ways]

Hey folks! Welcome to another post with another BSOD error, in this case, caused due to “Critical Process Died”. Just like breaking mirrors are considered bad omen for humans, BSOD are considered bad omen for PCs. Well, The BSOD or Blue screen of Death is the point where every Windows reach after facing a huge error. And to be honest, BSOD are caused due to so many reasons that half of my posts are full of solving BSOD errors.

So, today we will be dealing with another error that causes BSOD, the ” Critical Process Died ” error. Despite the fact that there are over 500 error codes for BSOD, this error has the biggest contribution.

In case you get a BSOD with the error code “Critical Process Died”, worry not. In the next 5 minutes, you will learn what this error code is? , What causes this error? How to solve this problem? and How to prevent it from happening again?


As the name suggests the Critical Process Died error is caused when an important Windows process is unexpectedly stopped. The problem here is that this could happen anytime in-between booting your PC to running a particular software.  The versatility of BSOD errors is what makes them so vulnerable. But Fortunately, BSOD is caused due to certain reasons such as-

  • Corrupted Windows File
  • Outdated Drivers
  • Infected Files
  • Incompatibility
  • Windows Update

Fix Critical Process Died Error on Windows 10

Since we have no idea what exactly caused this error, there is no particular fix. We will have to try each of them and see which one fixes the problem.

1. Troubleshoot Hardware

As mentioned before, this error is caused due to an unexpected stop in the Windows process. Well, this could be done due to software issues, but there is a good chance that faulty hardware might be the issue. Luckily for us, The Windows Troubleshooting tool can help us find the problem and fix it if possible. To use this tool,

  • First, open Control Panel.

  • Now on the top right corner, search Hardware and Devices.

  • Click on Hardware and Devices to Open it.

  • Click on Next to begin the Troubleshooting.


  • After a few minutes later, Windows will tell you, if your Hardware is good or not.

2. Run SFC and DISM

The SFC or System File Checker is a Windows tool used to find corrupted Windows files and replace them with the stock ones. This in-built tool often solves BSOD and it fixes any protected Windows file. To run this tool,

  •  Press Windows + X and click on Command Prompt(admin).

  • Now, type in “sfc/scannow” and press Enter.

  • This process takes some time, so be patient. Once the scan is complete, restart your PC and check if the problem persists.

The DISM or Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool is a command-line tool used to mount Windows Image. In case SFC fails to complete its task, you can always rely on DISM as it will help repair corrupt Windows image or .wim files. To run this tool,

  • Open Command Prompt as admin.
  • Now type the following-
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth” then press Enter.
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /Scan-Health” then press Enter.
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth” and press Enter again.

  • Now reboot your PC and see if the problem remains.

3. Run Antivirus

If none of the above methods helps, then your files are not corrupted at least. But that doesn’t ensure that they are not infected. And to be clear, infected files can very much stop your Windows from doing basic stuff causing BSOD. So, run a full system scan and take all the necessary steps to remove the infected files.

If you don’t use any Antivirus, you can always rely on Windows Defender. To use Windows Defender,

  • Open Start menu and search Windows Defender.

  • Now under Scan options and click on Full and Scan now.

  • This process will take at least 5hrs so leave your PC for some time. Once the scan is complete, remove the infected files.

4. Update System Drivers

The Critical_process_died error gets really common if you are running new software on old drivers. This issue can be solved, by either updating your Windows or Individually updating your Drivers.  Note that updating your drivers also fixes any corrupted driver file.

To update your Windows-

  •  Open Start and type”Windows Update“.

  • Navigate through the menu and click on Update and Recovery.
  • In the Windows Update menu, Click on “Check for Updates

  • Now click on Install Updates to download Windows updates.

  • Restart your PC to install updates.

To individually update your drivers,

  • Start by opening Command Prompt as admin by pressing Windows + X.

  • Now, type in “eventvwr” and press Enter.


  • Go to Windows Logs -> System.

  • Here, every task at a critical level is the cause of the problem. By clicking on Source, you can find the source and manually download the drivers.

4. Last Resort: Restore/Re-install Your Windows

The Windows usually terminates or restarts after showing error is because it wants to prevent itself from further damage. But if none of the methods worked, the damage is already done and cannot be reversed. In such cases, you have two option, you can either Restore your Windows or Re-install it.

This way you won’t lose your important data and your OS will be as good as new.

The Critical_Process_Died error is one of the most common BSOD errors in Windows 10. And it is true that getting BSOD is not good for PCs, it often happens due to small reasons. As for this error, it could happen for both big and small causes. But whatever the causes are, we are always here to help you.
