How to Install Bluetooth Driver in Windows 10?

Bluetooth is one of the most popular ways modern devices communicate and send data to and from each other. However, without a driver, none of that would be possible. A “Bluetooth driver” is essentially software that’s installed on your Windows 10 operating system to communicate with external hardware. These can be devices such as your phone, wireless earphones, and other computers.

In this guide, we’ll go into depth and explain exactly what a Bluetooth driver for window 10 is, which one you need, and how to download and install it.

What Is Bluetooth Driver?

As mentioned earlier, a Bluetooth driver is software that you have to install on your computer in order to have Bluetooth functionality. Bluetooth lets you communicate with other devices as long as those devices have Bluetooth enabled. An example of this would be the transfer of files to your phone from your computer.

An important thing to note is that Bluetooth drivers are device and operating system specific. Hence, the driver that works on your Windows 10 PC won’t work for Windows 8, Windows 7, iOS, or Android. By default, Bluetooth drivers are automatically installed on your Windows 10 PC during your first time setup.

However, sometimes things can go wrong with the driver’s installation files, leaving it inoperable. In that case, you’ll need to know some specifics of your Bluetooth device to reinstall the driver. We’ll discuss this in more detail in the sections below.

Which Bluetooth Driver Do You Need?

Bluetooth drivers are different for every Windows 10 device. It truly depends on who the manufacturer of the Bluetooth module fitted onto your computer’s motherboard is. Some of the most common manufacturers for Bluetooth modules in Windows 10 computers are Dell, Intel, and Qualcomm.

If your laptop is fairly modern, it’s highly likely that one of these corporations manufactured your Bluetooth hardware. In order for these modules to function, you have to download and install the latest driver specific to that manufacturer.

Luckily for us, Windows 10 has made it pretty easy for us to determine which Bluetooth driver we need to install. A handy built-in tool in Windows 10 known as Device Manager lists all the hardware connected to your computer along with its driver details. If you want to check which Bluetooth driver your computer needs and uses, follow the steps below:

  1. Search for “Device Manager” in your start menu and select the application when it appears in the results.
  2. Select the arrow next to “Bluetooth” to expand the section and find your Bluetooth adapter. In this example, it’s labeled as “Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R)“. Hence, we can immediately infer that the Bluetooth driver our Windows 10 PC needs is from Intel.
  3. Right-click on “Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R)” and select properties.
  4. Next, click on the driver tab. Here, you’ll find all the information you need to figure out which Bluetooth driver you need. You’ll see the driver version and its date of release listed.

If you believe that you have an outdated driver version, it’s important you download the latest updates from your manufacturer. We’ll show you where and how you can install the latest Bluetooth driver updates in the following section.

How To Install Bluetooth Driver In Windows?

Installing a Bluetooth driver follows the same steps as installing any other driver on Windows 10 such as a graphics or network driver. There are two ways you can install a driver, through Device Manager or by manually going to your Bluetooth device’s manufacturer’s website and installing it yourself.

Which way you choose to do it is completely up to you, however, we recommend novice PC users to stick to using Device Manager. It simplifies the process a lot and you won’t have to worry about certain specifics such as your driver version and compatibility with your Windows 10 PC.

Method 1: Using Device Manager

The Device Manager makes installing drivers a piece of cake. Just follow the simple steps below and you’ll have your Bluetooth driver updated in no time. Note, make sure you’re connected to the internet before you begin.

  1. Open Device Manager, navigate to Bluetooth Devices, right-click on your Bluetooth adapter, and select “Update driver”.
  2. Next, in the window that opens click on “Search automatically for drivers“.
  3. If there any pending driver updates available, Windows will automatically download and install them. We recommend you restart your computer after the installation is completed.

Method 2: Download Bluetooth Drivers

This method has several extra steps to it. So, why even bother with it? Sometimes, Device Manager can fail to detect the latest updates from your Bluetooth manufacturer. Although it is unlikely for a Bluetooth driver, it can and does happen from time to time.

Before you begin, you’ll need to identify your Bluetooth driver version and its manufacturer. Refer back to the “Which Bluetooth Driver Do You Need?” section if you need help. After that’s done, follow the steps below:

  1. Visit your manufacturer’s download link. Here are the links of the most common Bluetooth driver manufacturers and their download pages: Intel, Qualcomm, Dell. We’ll be using Intel as our example.
  2. Next, select “Windows 10” and select the latest download link. Ensure that your device is listed under Supported Adapters.
  3. Before you download, read the “Detailed Description” section. Ensure that the driver version is a later release than the one you already have installed.
  4. Now download the .exe file, either 64-bit or 32-bit depending on your system architecture.
  5. Once the file is downloaded, run the setup by clicking on Next. Once the installation is completed you should have your Bluetooth driver successfully installed and running on Windows 10.
