Windows Update is one of the easiest ways you can stay up to date with the latest releases for Windows. It helps your computer keep up with important security updates, driver patches, and even operating system upgrades. While this may be true, users are frequently reporting issues and errors surrounding the program. Recently, all the talk has been about the 0x8024a105 error.
The most obvious thing to do when Windows Update gives you an error code is to see if Microsoft has any answers about it. Unfortunately, the 0x8024a105 is not specifically listed on the documentation provided by Microsoft. Nevertheless, we can deduce that any Windows error beginning with the code 0x8024A is related to the Automatic Updates feature.
Usually, these update errors can be fixed with a simple reboot, but sometimes they are a little more persistent. If you’ve already restarted your PC to no avail, then we suggest you check out our guide to fixing the 0x8024a105 error written below.
How to Fix Windows Update Error 0x8024a105?
It’s important to understand that all the methods we’ll be using below can be done within Windows itself. We do not condone the use of third party apps to detect and fix errors. Most of the time, these “Repair Tools” will contain adware and possibly even malware that could cause further issues for your computer. Since that’s out of the way, let’s get rid of this 0x8024a105 error once and for all.
Method #1: Run Windows Update Troubleshooter
Whenever you come across an update error, you can run the Windows Update Troubleshooter to help diagnose and resolve problems. Ensure that you are connected to the internet and follow the steps below:
- Open Windows’s Settings and select Update and Security.
- Select the Troubleshoot tab on the left and click Windows Update and select “Run the Troubleshooter”.
- The troubleshooter will begin detecting any problems on your PC.
In some cases, the troubleshooter will be able to fix the issue. However, if the troubleshooter was unable to identify any issues related to 0x8024a105 move on to the next method.
Method #2: Manually Re-initiate Windows Update Using Command Prompt
The Windows command line (Command Prompt) can help reset your Windows Update components. This will fix any corrupted Windows Update files, remove errors like 0x8024a105, and help complete your Windows updates. In order to do this, search for Command Prompt in the Windows Start menu search bar, right-click it and select “Run as administrator”.
Once you’re in the terminal, you’ll need to first stop the BITS, Cryptographic Services, MSI Installer, and Windows Update Services. You can do this by entering the following commands below, one by one.
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
Now, you’ll have to rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folder. These are Windows operating system folders that are required for Windows Update to work. The update services we stopped earlier such as BITS make use of the files located in these folders when Windows is initiating an update. To rename the files, enter the following commands in command prompt one by one.
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
After this, you’ll need to restart BITS, Cryptographic Services, and the MSI installer. To do this, all you have to do is enter the following commands in the command prompt. Make sure you press ENTER after each entry, to ensure each one is executed alone.
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserve
Now you can close Command Prompt and restart your computer. Go back to Windows Update and attempt to download the latest updates. In most cases, this will solve this issue. However, sometimes the 0x8024a105 error can be a real pesky issue to deal with. If this method hasn’t worked for you, head on over to Method #3.
Method #3: Run SFC (System File Checker)
The Windows System File Checker will thoroughly check the integrity of all Windows application files. It will detect any incorrect, corrupt, or damaged Windows Update files and replace it with fixed files. This process is also performed in Command Prompt. Follow the steps below:
- Open Command Prompt and Run as Administrator.
- In the command line enter “sfc /scannow”.
- Note, this process may take a while depending on the number of files that will need to be fixed. Hence, be patient and don’t close the command window.
Method #4: Run Disk Cleanup
Disk Cleanup is a Windows application that removes unnecessary files, including temporary files. It searches for hard drive files that are no longer needed. Sometimes convoluted and old files may cause Windows update errors such as 0x8024a105 to appear. Open Disk Cleanup from the Start menu, and it will automatically search for files that you can get rid of.
In the settings, check all the boxes and press OK to remove unwanted files. Just double-check that you don’t have any files you would’ve restored in places such as the Recycle Bin. Moreover, don’t worry, Disk Cleanup will not remove any files that will affect your operating system in any way.
Method #5: Reset Your PC
Unfortunately, if none of the methods above have worked, you’ll have to Reset your PC. However, before you do this we recommend you take your computer to official support staff to see if the 0x8024a105 can be fixed by other means. Follow the steps below:
- Search for “Reset this PC” in your Star menu bar and click to open.
